COMPANY BIO 1997-2025

Jane Franklin Dance in partnership
with music, media, visual artists and community participants.

A dynamic presence in the Washington DC metropolitan area from 1997 to 2025, Jane Franklin Dance was featured at numerous regional venues and festivals, as well as internationally in Mexico. Over the course of the organization’s history, Jane Franklin created innovative, collaborative works that brought dancers together with the round-wall skateboarding community, life-size kinetic sculpture, site-specific architecture, dogs and their owners, and interactive live video and sound in a range of public art projects.

The company received notable recognition, including the Creative Communities Award from the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, an Artist-in-Residence award from the Alexandria Commission for the Arts and Office of the Arts for Site See—an outdoor installation at Waterfront Park (2023)—as well as a 275th Commemorative Program grant and Arts Enrichment Program grants (2024).

Jane Franklin Dance was recognized with the Virginia Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and included in Virginia’s Tour Directory (1997–2024). The company’s collaborative projects received multi-year support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, Alexandria Commission for the Arts, and Arlington Commission for the Arts. Additional funding was provided by the Arlington Community Foundation, American Composers Forum (Washington DC Chapter) and the Washington Forrest Foundation.

The Forty+ Project and related workshops engaged the community through free, health-focused movement sessions at senior centers, classes for active older adults, and rare performance opportunities for dancers over age 40. The organization offered summer camps and after-school programs that introduced dance and movement to younger generations.

Jane Franklin Dance is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization recognized as tax-exempt by the IRS. Contributions are tax-deductible for federal income tax purposes (EIN: 74-2179431).
